Motivations for Corporations to Use Social Media

If you have been paying attention to life in the last 15 years, you will notice that social media is being used by corporations and companies. Most companies in general have a social media of some form up, whether it's twitter, Facebook, Snap-chat etc. Companies may utilize social media differently than others. Small companies such as Brisco County Wood Grill will use social media as a form of advertisement. Promoting different steaks and southwestern specialties, Brisco County uses social media such as Facebook as a tool to promote their service. However, not all companies or corporations use social media for the same purpose. On the complete opposite end of the extreme spectrum, we have Cambridge Analytica. CA uses social media in a completely different way. Attempting to stay out of the spotlight and in the shadows, this corporation was attempting to stay hidden. While it's purpose was to use the data accumulated by social media such as Facebook in order to influence governmental agendas and elections.
Now I know what you're thinking. This is such an extreme example between the two. Well you are right! On the one hand, most companies use social media to promote an idea, service or good. I chose Brisco County probably because I am biased, or because my family owns this particular fantastic restaurant located on County Line Rd in Germantown, WI. It's a typical example of utilizing social media to advertise it's menu in order to attract customers.  Sometimes, they will use Facebook to advertise if they have positions for hire available as well.
I was working at Brisco before and after they created their Facebook page. The restaurant has been open for about 20 years now, and has helped support our entire family. Business will always fluctuate, but ever since they created their Facebook page, they have generated more customers and more business.
Cambridge Analytica on the other hand would prefer secrecy: The less people that know of it's existence the better. You can say they went bankrupt in that regard.
CA has recently hit national spotlight because of it's role in American Politics and use of illegal tactics. In many cases where a company scandal reaches social media, that can be catastrophic. In this case, it was a nuclear meltdown. Facebook is being federally investigated for it's connection to CA. More and more facts are coming out daily, and the scandal goes deeper and deeper. Facebook has lost billions and billions of dollars in value just this week due to this revelation. Other companies such as twitter are seeing a spike in number of users.
The whole connection is that CA has data on millions of users of Facebook. Facebook is collecting data on people with and without their consent, as more cases are uncovered of facebook apps logging android data, calls, and messages.
Without a doubt CA will not survive once the media and public have had their turn. Facebook has been dominant for years, so it will be interesting to see if CA was the beginning of the end for Facebook.
In the end, social media has its various uses. Cambridge Analytica may have been undone by social media, but Brisco County chugs along!
